Osteology and morphology of the probable stem-group osteichthyan Lophosteus superbus Pander from the Silurian of Estonia Lophosteus superbus Pander is a probable stem-group osteichthyan from the Silurian of Estonia. It has been known to paleontologists for over 150 years. However, its scattered and fragmental nature means that only through repeated investigations, especially those done by Prof. Per Ahlberg’s group in recent years, that its significance in the origin of osteichthyan can be fully exploited. Prof. Per Ahlberg and Henning Blom will explain how these jigsaw puzzle games were played. Prof. Per E. Ahlberg is currently a professor at the University of Uppsala. He was also elected to the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences. His principal fields of research are the Palaeozoic vertebrate evolution with focus on the origin of tetrapods, and the relationship of molecular-developmental patterning to morphological evolution. Henning Blom is currently a senior lecturer at the University of Uppsala. His main research activities are built around the framework of using fossil data to describe and understand the evolutionary history of early vertebrates in general, and in particular the origin and early evolution of gnathostomes, crown-group gnathostomes and tetrapods. |
